We all know about certain publications’ negative coverage of Meghan Markle, and it looks like our Duke and Duchess are ready to take action. Prince Harry announced his plans to defend Meghan and his family with a lawsuit against Associated Newspaper, the publishers behind British publications Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday.
While there has been positive coverage for Meghan’s actions as a royal — several members of the British press have been relentless in their pursuit of Meghan news bites. From criticizing her fashion choices to making rude comments on her past career moves, it’s easy to find reason in the Duke’s announcement.
On the Sussexes’ official website, Harry released a statement that the lawsuit is for the misuse of private information, infringement on copyright, and violation of the Data Protect Act 2018.
“Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences—a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son,” wrote Harry.
Any reader can see the emotion behind the announcement, where Harry details the impact the bad press has had on Meghan and his worries for the future if it were to continue. He mentions his late mother Princess Diana, noting that he fears losing Meghan in the same way if he doesn’t pursue the issue now.
The lawsuit comes after the end of the Sussexes’ royal tour in Africa, which brought on a lot of press attention. After spending “many months” building up the lawsuit and seeing the positive coverage from the publications guilty of bullying the Duchess, Harry thinks there is no better time for definitive action.
“There comes a point when the only thing to do is to stand up to this behaviour, because it destroys people and destroys lives. Put simply, it is bullying… We all know this isn’t acceptable, at any level. We won’t and can’t believe in a world where there is no accountability for this,” he stressed.
The Duke didn’t forget to thank fans for their support amid negativity, however. And for fans, the gratitude is felt. As for the lawsuit bringing a much-needed end to the bad press on our favorite royals, we can only hope.
