The Duchess of Sussex celebrated her 38th birthday on August 4 and in true charitable fashion, Meghan Markle’s birthday cake of choice supported a worthy cause. The carrot cake was baked by London-based bakery and cafe Luminary, which supports women that have experienced poverty, homelessness, violence, or criminal activity through its business.
Meghan’s choice for the charitable bakery should come as no surprise. Luminary was recently featured in the September edition of British Vogue when Meghan served as a guest editor, coinciding with the issue’s theme of “Forces for Change.” The bakery’s Instagram posted a shot of Meghan’s handwritten note to the business, thanking them for their commitment to serving the community and embodying the issue’s theme of “forces for change.”
The carrot cake was decorated with dried orange slices and fresh sprigs of rosemary, reading “Happy Birthday, Meghan!” front and center. Similar to Meghan’s lemon-and-elderflower wedding cake, the carrot cake is not the most traditional flavor of choice when it comes to birthday cakes but could be the next trend thanks to Meghan’s widespread influence.
Meghan’s birthday cake was one of the few glimpses the public were able to get of her recent birthday celebrations. The celebrations remained private and out of the public eyes save for scattered social media posts. Prince Harry celebrated her birthday publicly with an Instagram post, thanking her for joining in on this “adventure.”
Royal correspondent Omid Scobie let the public in on part of the celebration – the birthday cake – with a tweet thanking Luminary for the birthday retreat. Scobie wrote, “Thanks so much to Alice Williams and the awesome team at @LuminaryBakery in London for letting us join them last week as they created Duchess Meghan’s beautiful birthday cake.” The quick snapshot of the cake was enough to leave Meghan fans with some serious FOMO, both of the cake and the secret birthday celebrations.
Are we still wishing that we were there to wish Meghan a Happy Birthday in person and enjoy this beautiful cake? Yes. But hey, here’s to hoping that we all get an invite to next year’s festivities.
