According to official documents, Meghan Markle tried sneaking out of her own baby shower. With a price tag of around $500,000 the Duchess did not want to seem as though she was enjoying all the media attention.
Back in February, Meghan enjoyed a lavish and star-studded baby shower in New York city. She was staying at The Mark Hotel. Her baby shower had A-list guests like Serena Williams, Jessica Mulroney, Priyanka Chopra and Amal Clooney.
Reportedly, Meghan traveled to the celebration on the Clooney’s $40 million private jet. She also stayed in a room rumored to have costed $75,000 a night.
Paparazzi camped outside The Mark Hotel, capturing the arrival of her celebrity guests. Yet, the entire baby shower is believed to have been put together by Meghan’s best friend Jessica Mulroney.
We are sure Meghan Markle enjoyed this time to celebrate with her good friends. Because her inner-circle is so full of celebrities, the get together definitely caused a scene. Due to the attention this brought, Meghan needed to take extra and somewhat extreme security and privacy measures.
Recent state department documents have come out revealing some interesting information from the costly celebration. As a result of the Freedom of Information Act, the Daily Mail was able to uncover these documents. They explain that Meghan asked her security detail to essentially sneak her out of her five-star hotel.
The report stated: “The VIP [Meghan] explained that her intent was to change the literal optics of the departure, making it appear that she was at least attempting to sneak out of the hotel in photos rather than exiting through the main entrance and giving the potential impression that she was enjoying the media attention.”
In her attempt to change the ‘optics’ of her departure Meghan still ended up drawing great media attention. According to the report, her request resulted in all of the planned transportation being moved to the new door. This was a dead giveaway for the media of Markle’s change of plans.
Additionally, documents revealed the huge security measures that were taken to ensure Meghan’s safety. Diplomatic officials conducted a full terrorist and internet threat assessment of the Duchess. In the end it was found that Meghan was at low-risk for any threats.
“Many members of the royal family are very easily recognized personalities; therefore, they are attractive targets for those seeking notoriety”, the document reads. While this information was revealed, good portions of the details remained classified.
Fans and stars alike flocked to Manhattan’s Upper East Side in February to get a glimpse of Meghan’s festivities. The state department would not officially reveal the cost of the celebration.
After Meghan “sneaked out” of her hotel, she took a government department SUV to The Polo Bar for an A-list dinner. The reports even disclose that Meghan made a last-minute change to her lunch location. She wanted to be at a place where she could not be photographed.
Additionally, it was revealed that both UK and US security were involved in order to ensure Meghan’s privacy and safety.
At the time of the shower, Daily Mail’s Piers Morgan said that “The key thing about the royals is to be understated.” While it is known that they have great wealth, it comes from the British people. It is royal duty not to rub that fact in the faces of the British nation.
Despite the backlash received, the Palace does make a good point in Meghan’s defense. Each year the royals have hundreds of engagements and very commonly represent Britain abroad. While the baby shower is a bit of a stretch, it is an abroad engagement.
We aren’t sure how to feel about Meghan Markle’s decision to sneak out of her baby shower. But hey, only the best for baby Archie.
