The highly-anticipated list is out! Time released its unranked collection of the 25 most influential people on the internet earlier today. It comes as no surprise that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex snagged a spot. Let’s take a look at how the couple earned this mention on the star studded list.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry both took down their personal Instagram pages and launched the @sussexroyal Instagram page as a couple. (Although photos from Meghan’s closed account are still floating around.) The account was created in April alongside the Sussexes move from Kensington Palace to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor Castle.
Just moments after the launch of their joint Instagram page, the Sussexes broke social media records. Meghan and Prince Harry accumulated a whopping 1 million followers in just 6 hours… talk about internet influence.
Incredibly, the couple has now racked up 9.1 million followers. While photos of the adorable baby Archie definitely draw attention, Meghan and Prince Harry mainly use the account to highlight their work as a couple.
Time highlights a unique tactic used by the royal’s Instagram page, “Each month, in an effort to highlight advocates and organizations focusing on issues such as climate change and mental health awareness, the account rotates the users it follows—a savvy strategy that has driven headlines.”
Although the royal family is notorious for following strict tradition, Meghan and Prince Harry have done an amazing job incorporating the internet with the crown.
Another reason Time noted the royal’s internet influence was because “The Sussexes’ forward-thinking, cause-oriented approach to social media fits neatly with other ways they are establishing their identity beyond the crown.”
As dedicated followers, we are looking forward to seeing how the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue to win over and influence the internet.
