Meghan Markle and Prince Harry spent the night at the annual WellChild Awards in London. The event honored youth who have coped with serious illnesses and those who have helped care for them. The royal couple sat with 11 children and a group of care professionals receiving awards.
WellChild is a national charity for seriously ill children and their loved ones. Harry became a Patron back in 2007, and naturally, Meghan became invested as well. The charity was one of four the couple chose to benefit from the public’s donations to celebrate baby Archie‘s birth in May.
While talking to the young award winners, Meghan revealed baby Archie attended his first playgroup earlier that day. When Harry bonded with a fellow redhead, he excitedly claimed that Archie was a redhead as well, “You can see it in his eyebrows.”
The Duke spoke at the ceremony itself, delivering a powerful and emotional speech. “Last year, when my wife and I attended, we knew we were expecting our first child—no one else did at the time, but we did,” he stated.
“I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tight during the awards, both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day, and more so, what it would be like to do everything we could to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over time,” he continued. “And now, as parents, being here and speaking to all of you pulls at my heartstrings in a way I could have never understood until I had a child of my own.”
His words touched the attendees’ hearts (and ours, of course). We can only look forward to the future work that WellChild and our favorite royal couple will do.
