Our favorite Duchess of Sussex had a particularly special interview while she was guest-editing British Vogue’s September edition. Meghan and Michelle Obama went to lunch, and we need to know all of the details. Here’s what we have so far.
The Duchess of Sussex and Michelle Obama discussed life, their pasts, motherhood, and everything in between over… chicken tacos? Yes, a meal fit for quite honestly everyone.
Meghan wrote in Vogue, “over a casual lunch of chicken tacos and my ever-burgeoning bump I asked Michelle if she would help me with this secret project.”
From this, we know the interview took place while Meghan was still pregnant. This timeline makes sense as the Duchess of Sussex has been working on the September issue of Vogue for the last seven months.
While we do not know where or what kind of chicken tacos were consumed, some humorous theories are circulating. An Elle article speculates that the tacos had to have been consumed at The Cheesecake Factory. Can we confirm this conspiracy theory? Absolutely not. But it did give us a laugh.
Michelle also gave Meghan some heartwarming advice about parenting children. Meghan wrote about Mrs. Obama’s very kind Mother’s Day wish to her and then asked, “What has motherhood taught you?”
In response to this Michelle shared, “As mothers, we just don’t want anything or anyone to hurt our babies. But life has other plans. Bruised knees, bumpy roads and broken hearts are part of the deal.”
It was also discussed that the key to motherhood is letting go, even when it’s difficult. Michelle said “my job is to give them the space to explore and develop into the people they want to be.”
Through further questions you can view here on Vogue‘s site, Mrs. Obama also asserts that her advice would be the same if she had sons instead of daughters. We know Meghan will take these words to heart when raising baby Archie.
When asked about “the most beautiful sound” she’d ever heard, Michelle reminisced about when her two daughters were still babies. She told Meghan, “We loved to listen to the little sounds they’d make – especially the way they cooed when they were deep into dreaming.”
From there she went on to tell Meghan “I’m so excited for you and Harry to experience that, Meghan. Savour it all.” We love to see this support between the two moms.
Throughout Meghan’s article on the Vogue website, she praises Michelle for her grace and thoughtfulness throughout the question process. While the Duchess of Sussex aimed to send “simple questions” to not impose, Michelle Obama responded with generosity.
Meghan wrote, “A few “simple questions” (which she could have answered with a sentence or two) were returned to me as a thoughtful, reflective and beautifully curated narrative.” We truly enjoyed looking at this lunch conversation.
To conclude her online article for Vogue, Meghan thanks her “former First Lady, and now friend, Michelle.” What an incredible friendship! We hope to learn more details about the two women’s lunch encounter.
