Now that the world has been introduced to Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, what’s in his future as a member of this royal family?
Here are some signs that Meghan and Harry are trying to raise their family in a more modern way without some of the formalities usually associated with being a royal.
Meghan and Harry could have chosen the obvious Charles, Philip or Henry (Harry’s given name). Instead, they decided upon two names with no royal connections. Archie is traditionally a nickname for Archibald, but the couple decided to use the more common nickname. And Harrison was, until recently, more common as a surname.
Little Archie has not been given an official title. Meghan and Harry had options: Earl of Dumbarton or the lesser Lord Archie, but decided to forego this formality. He will still be addressed as “Master,” but only for formal correspondence.
Harry’s Aunt Anne, the Princess Royal, also married a commoner. She chose not to give titles to her children, Peter and Zara Phillips. As they were not expected to be a part of the day-to-day activities of the monarchy, they were free to pursue their own personal and professional paths. Peter now heads a sports management company, and Zara is a professional equestrian, winning a team silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics.
Harry’s Uncle Andrew, Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of York decided to bestow titles to their daughters Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. Although they have the titles, they have limited roles within the royal family and therefore do not receive a royal salary. As Archie grows to adulthood he could choose to embrace the monarchy and continue the work of his parents or create a life without the responsibilities of public service.
When Archie’s grandfather, Prince Charles, becomes king he could bestow a title. Grandchildren of the monarch can become HRH Prince or Princess, regardless of their age. Archie is also entitled to succeed his father as the Duke of Sussex.
Meghan and Harry recently settled into their new home, Frogmore Cottage on the grounds of Windsor Castle, The Queen’s weekend residence. The historic cottage was previously home to members of royal staff, but recently renovated into a family home. Surrounded by gardens created in the 1790’s makes it an idyllic location for outdoor family activities.
Meghan has consistently used and promoted eco-friendly sustainable products. She was especially cautious to use organic paints in Archie’s nursery and plans to grow her own fruit and vegetables. Prince Charles has endorsed green and clean technologies for decades, but Meghan is bringing her own Southern California sensibilities to create a safe and healthy modern home for her family.
